MLK Community Spirit Award

About the Award:

The MILK Community Spirit Award was created to demonstrate Tecumseh’s ongoing commitment to being an inclusive City that strives to create an environment where all people belong, are loved, supported, and protected. The goal of the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Spirit Award is to honor those that have made a significant contribution to create a true community of belonging for all who call Tecumseh their home; someone who embodies Dr. King’s vision for a “Beloved Community.”

A ‘Beloved Community’ is a place where all people, from all walks of life, can live in peace and harmony together.  It is a society built around love, justice, brother/sisterhood, equal opportunities and overall inclusion and acceptance of all people.  A nominee for this award should be someone who has worked toward creating this spirit of Community in Tecumseh.  This could be someone who created a new program, volunteered to make our community a better place to live, educated or bought awareness to social issues, or someone who actively breaks down racial and cultural divides, etc.

“The end is reconciliation; the end is redemption; the end is the creation of the Beloved Community. It is this type of spirit and this type of love that can transform opponents into friends. It is this type of understanding goodwill that will transform the deep gloom of the old age into the exuberant gladness of the new age. It is this love which will bring about miracles in the hearts of men.”

- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. -- “Facing the Challenge of a New Age,” 1956

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

Any student or young adult that has made an impact toward creating a ‘Beloved Community’ here in Tecumseh is eligible to receive the award.  The nominee does not have to reside in Tecumseh, but their impact on Tecumseh must be illustrated in the nomination form.

HOW TO NOMINATE SOMEONE:

The November 30, 2023, deadline for the 2024 Community Spirit Award has passed and unfortunately, neither the City of Tecumseh or Community Learning Connections received any submissions this year.

To prioritize the MLK Community Spirit Award for future years a volunteer committee comprised of community members, city staff, and school personnel is being formed with the goal to meet quarterly during 2024 to develop a marketing and public relations campaign and secure funding for future awards.
