MLive statewide entertainment reporter John Gonzalez is on the hunt for Michigan's Best Doughnut, and today his travels brought him to Tecumseh, where Ann Arbor News readers votedLev's Bakery The People's Choice for best area doughnut shop.
Gonzo, fellow MLive staffer Frtiz Klug, Ann Arbor News photographer Courtney Sacco and I arrived at Lev's at 11. am., and were warmly greeted by Velma DeJonghe, wife and mother of co-owners Lev and Roger DeJonghe.
Lev's has been operating on East Chicago Boulevard in Tecumseh since the mid 1960s.The secret to the bakery's success appears to be two-fold: excellent doughnuts, and a dedicated community. As Gonzo, Fritz and I sampled Lev's doughnuts, cinnamon rolls and elephant ears, we watched customer after customer arrive and get greeted by name. Even hours after peak doughnut time, sales were brisk at Lev's.
"It's a lot of work, but we just enjoy the people," said Velma.
And we enjoyed the doughnuts. From the giant cinnamon roll topped with cream cheese frosting to the perfectly executed plain fried cake to the maple long john (a customer favorite), we all agreed that there is something special about the doughnuts from Lev's Bakery.
Gonzo and Fritz still have a seven more stops on the Michigan's Best Doughnut tour. Gonzo will announce his list of favorite doughnuts on Thursday, March 27.
